I agree with that. I had similar intuition when I was writing “How to enter the Metaverse as a brand & win .

More about (fragments):

Big brands (here tech brands / Giants) need to understand Web3 values & let go of control (yes). By controlling they build ‘fake worlds’ instead ‘virtual worlds’, based on true digital ownership and a decentralized economy.

Web3 is a mindset. Community FIRST. True ownership via blockchain technology. Creators economy.

In long term ‘fake worlds’ controlled by big brands (here tech brands) are not what the Web3 community wishes to experience or choose. Because they represent different values.

At this point in time maybe it does not play a huge role, because we all still learn what to do & how. However, it will be crucial when the metaverse became an adult.

The people will recognize it as they recognize authenticity in Web2 brand communication.

So, the long-term strategy needs to be built on a solid foundation like true digital ownership.

I believe that brands that understand it, win first in the long run on this evolutionary journey and became true pioneers & ‘Digi-sapiens’ influencers (Source: Agnieszka Jaworska, 2022)

However, I also believe that The Sandbox know the way by leading with Web3 mindset in decentralized ecosystem. This is why:

Decentraland 中文社区 choose also that direction:

That’s why I am more optimistic/bullish than Vitalic. In my opinion, we are somewhere in between, closer to Digi-Sapiens mindset & web3 solutions.

But it is also very likely that one day a startup will be created and will make a huge difference like Ethereum (…)

I don’t feel that this argument is strong. Why? Before the Facebook / Ethereum / BAYC era, did people know they wanted Facebook / Ethereum / BAYC? Probably not.

Now, let’s talk about true value & share some reflections about the Metaverse.

Below is my conceptual approach rather than definition. For many reasons, I feel it is insightful.

There are many LAYERS to understand what THE METAVERSE really IS…

#1 We are living in a technological movement from the Web2 to WEB3, where the Internet became IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE (3D). Thanks to VR technology we plug into an ecosystem / digital platform. This experience will become easier with the growth of new technological solutions.

#2 Metaverse is strongly connected to the feeling of presence which can be experienced by different people around the world (family, friends, coworkers, fans, customers) and their activities (work, education, events, lifestyle, and many more).

#3 Metaverse is powered by the people where true digital OWNERSHIP & COMMUNITY RULES; PLAYFULNESS & FUN BECAME FIRST.

#4 Metaverse topics include: AI, NFTS, BLOCKCHAIN, CRYPTOCURRENCY, DIGITAL FASHION, AVATARS & DIGI-SAPIENS, VOLUMETRIC, HAPTIC, 5G, DECENTRALIZATION, VR/AR, VARIABLES (…)

#5 Is the one METAVERSE or are a metaverses? The first has no definition (yet). The second we can explore to some point by gaming (Roblox, Sandbox, Fortnite), fashion (Balenciaga, Nike, Gucci), the music industry (Snoop Dogg).

#6 Metaverse has immense untapped possibilities for all… brands, industries, people, artists.

#7 Metaverse is a mindset. Web2 mindset is not able to create Web3 experience.

Now as I reflect on that I will also add:

#9 INTEROPERABILITY (!)

Maybe we don’t have a rigid definition (for now) but why not accept this and live in the phase of creation? As now to some extent, however, we can do this in a more conscious way.

There are many concepts, especially in philosophy, that does not have a rigid definition, these are the so-called ‘vague’ concepts and they have a great history. We’ll see over time if the Metaverse is one of those concepts. More about this theme: https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/vagueness/

However, we have more serious attempts to create a definition e.g. via Matthew Ball in the book “The Metaverse and how it will revolutionize everything” (2022)

Matthew's definition of the Metaverse:

“A massively scaled and interoperable network of real-time rendered 3D virtual worlds that can be experienced synchronously and persistently by effectively unlimited number of users with an individual sense of presence, and with continuity of data, such as identity, history, entitlements, objects, communications, and payments.” For more explanation I invite you to read the book (Matthew Ball, 2022)
